It is January 25, 1939. You reside in what is left of Barcelona. The Spanish Civil War has raged for several years. At night, the bombs fall. Franco’s forces have surrounded and strangled your beloved city, Within, moral and societal decay have gripped the institutions you loved. At first, democracy was the war cry. Viva la Republica! Then, the anarchists arose and spoke of the need to collectivize, collectivize, collectivize. Then, the Stalinists sprang up and called for nationalization. At least Laporta took care of the tax man, unlike Atletico de Madrid. Your hair turns grey, then disappears. The next day, you announce your retirement.

The title is quite fitting on a personal level. 3 years ago I took off for my first vacation where I would spend it entirely alone. I went with a Copy of Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia that I intended to read one of the bars that the expat writers of the early 20th century used to go frequent (yes, some are still open). I never got more than 2 chapter in. The only other things I wanted to do was dance, sleep, and go see an FC Barcelona game. However, I had the feeling I was about to lose my job, I didn’t save enough money, and had a to do list a mile long of things I didn’t want to see but everyone said “You just have to to to this…”

I went about my days miserable, and not just because it was raining and I had no jacket or that I flew across the country and the Atlantic in a cast. But because I wasn’t doing anything I wanted to do. Finally with 3 days left I let it all go I walked to a bar and drank with some fellow travelers and even hit a club. With 2 days I ran into some British guys who I had met earlier. They finally convinced me to go to the Barcelona game that night. There was no one at the desk where I could buy a ticket from my hostel, so I walked to the FC Barcelona store around the corner to buy a game scarf. Who cares if I was probably going to be unemployed in 2 months. I was going to do Barcelona the exact way I wanted to. I got back 30 minutes later. The guy who was just leaving the desk as I was walking in took the last ticket.
